This season, Elsa Schiaparelli’s emblematic 'Tears' Dress is reinterpreted in subversive ways. A study in craftsmanship and contrasts, the slender gown is inspired by a design Schiaparelli created with the artist Salvador Dalí as part of her 1938 'Circus' collection in which they designed a trompe l’oeil print that resembled torn fabric.

Today, Daniel Roseberry has made those rips of cloth real with three new Tears Dress styles. Each features fabric shreds which reveal a skin-colored inner layer suggesting exposed skin beneath. A white bias-cut satin style has thin straps and a plunging neckline; a black silk version features a built-in bustier; and a luminous halter-necked metallic-mesh iteration has tears embroidered in diamanté crystals. At once refined and irreverent, the 'Tears Dress' is designed to evoke emotion in both the wearer and admirer.
